NPCIL: RAPP-7 operating at 700 MWe
10th February 2026
Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) has announced that the Unit-7 (700 MW) of Rajasthan Atomic Power Project-7&8 (RAPP-7&8, 2 x 700 MW) at Rawatbhata, has achieved its rated power operation after complying with all pre-requisites including those stipulated by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB)
RAPS-7 is the third reactor of 700 MW series of sixteen indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) being set up in the country. These 700 MW PHWRs have advanced safety features and are among the safest reactors in the world
This achievement of RAPP-7, establishes the robustness of the NPCIL's 700 MW PHWR design and the capabilities of NPCIL and the Indian industries
NPCIL has also said that Light Water Commissioning post hot conditioning milestone of RAPP-8 is in progress
The indigenous 700 MW PHWRs will constitute a significant component of the capacity of 100 GW by 2047 announced under the Nuclear Energy Mission by the Government
A typical 700 MW reactor would generate about 5.2 Billion Units of clean electricity (at 85% Plant Load Factor) per annum thereby averting about 4.5 million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions annually
Presently, NPCIL operates 24 reactors (except RAPS-1) with a total capacity of 8780 MW. In addition to this, 13100 MW capacity is under implementation
