Generation data consist of both utility and non-utility sources from electricity and combined heat and power plants. Data are reported as net generation, not gross generation. The difference between gross and net generation is generally about 6% for fossil fuels stations, 1% for hydro stations, and 5% for all others

Based on this definition, Table below captures trend in country wise coal based electricity generation

For the year 2023, world coal based electricity generation was 9,935.7 TWh, that of India was 1,317.7 TWh (13.3% of world total), that of China was 5,499.2 TWh (55.3% of world total) while that of US was 675.1 TWh (6.8% of world total)

These 3 countries accounted for over 75% of global coal based electricity generation

US has shown a dramatic reduction in coal based electricity generation, due to shale boom, with gas displacing coal. From a peak of ~2,000 TWh in 2008, US coal based generation has fallen to current level of 675 TWh

In 2023, Australia (127.6 TWh), Indonesia (246.5 TWh), Japan (281.0 TWh), Russia (165.2 TWh), South Africa (186.1 TWh), South Korea (186.7 Twh), Taiwan (115.5 Twh), Turkey (116.9 Twh) and Vietnam (117.2 TWh) were the other important countries, each having coal based generation in excess of 100 TWh

IEA Forecasts to 2050

Under its Current Policies scenario, IEA estimates total electricity generation to increase from 31,229 TWh in 2024 to 59,426 TWh by 2050. Within that, it expects coal-based generation to decrease from 10,797 TWh in 2024 to 8,495 TWh in 2050, and account for 14.3%, compared to current 34.6%

Under its Stated Policies scenario, IEA estimates total electricity generation to increase from the same starting point of 31,229 TWh in 2024 to 58,081 TWh by 2050. Within that, it expects coal-based generation to decrease from 10,797 TWh in 2024 to 4,606 TWh in 2050, and account for 7.9%, compared to current 34.6%

Under its Net Zero Emissions scenario, IEA estimates total electricity generation to increase from the same starting point of 31,229 TWh in 2024 to 80,175 TWh by 2050.
