Generation data consist of both utility and non-utility sources from electricity and combined heat and power plants. Data are reported as net generation, not gross generation. The difference between gross and net generation is generally about 6% for fossil fuels stations, 1% for hydro stations, and 5% for all others

Based on this definition, Table below captures trend in country wise natural gas based electricity generation

For the year 2023, world natural gas based electricity generation was 6,491.5 TWh, that of India was 55.4 TWh (0.9% of world total), that of China was 266.7 TWh (4.1% of world total) while that of US was 1,806.1 TWh (27.8%% of world total)

These 3 countries accounted for 32.8% of global natural gas based electricity generation

US has shown a dramatic increase in natural gas based electricity generation, due to shale boom, with gas displacing coal. From a level of 601 TWh in 2000, US natural gas based generation has increased to current level of 1,806.1 TWh

In 2023, Egypt (175.0 TWh), Iran (304.9 TWh), Italy (110.9 TWh), Japan (312.4 TWh), Mexico (206.5 TWh), Russia (513.1 TWh), Saudi Arabia (246.1 TWh), South Korea (150.4 TWh), Taiwan (111.6 TWh), Thailand (129.4 TWh) and UAE (123.8 TWh) were the other important countries, each having natural gas based generation in excess of 100 TWh

IEA Forecasts to 2050

Under its Current Policies scenario, IEA estimates total electricity generation to increase from 31,229 TWh in 2024 to 59,426 TWh by 2050. Within that, it expects natural gas-based generation to increase from 6,785 TWh in 2024 to 9,961 TWh in 2050, and account for 16.8%, compared to current 21.7%

Under its Stated Policies scenario, IEA estimates total electricity generation to increase from the same starting point of 31,229 TWh in 2024 to 58,081 TWh by 2050. Within that, it expects natural gas-based generation to increase from 6,785 TWh in 2024 to 7,532 TWh in 2050, and account for 13%, compared to current 21.7%

Under its Net Zero Emissions scenario, IEA estimates total electricity generation to increase from the same starting point of 31,229 TWh in 2024 to 80,175 TWh by 2050. Within that, it expects natural gas-based generation with CCUS to be just 349 TWh (0.44%) and unabated natural gas based generation to be just 205 TWh (0.26%)
