K&A Coal-to-Chemicals Strategy Platform

Integrated engineering, configuration and financial screening for coal-to-chemicals projects
Coal-to-Chemicals: A Strategic Opportunity

India's growing energy and industrial demand, together with significant domestic coal resources and the Government's policy support for coal gasification, creates an important opportunity for development of coal-to-chemicals and coal-derived fuels.

The opportunity extends well beyond the choice of a downstream product. Gasifier configuration, coal quality, syngas composition, plant scale, downstream integration, utilities, capital cost and financing structure can collectively determine the long-term economics of a project.

The Strategic Challenge
Selecting the optimum project configuration is a strategic investment decision, not merely an engineering exercise.

Coal gasification projects are highly capital intensive, and major engineering decisions taken during project development can remain embedded in the technical and economic structure of the project throughout its operating life.

The challenge therefore extends beyond selecting the downstream product. The project must simultaneously consider coal characteristics, gasifier configuration, syngas quality, ASU requirements, downstream plant capacity, merchant versus captive product allocation, capital cost, operating cost and financing.

The K&A Coal-to-Chemicals Strategy Platform

The K&A Coal-to-Chemicals Strategy Platform has been developed as an integrated engineering and financial evaluation framework for strategic project screening and configuration evaluation.

The platform incorporates K&A engineering and commercial experience in a large number of default assumptions, while allowing users to replace these assumptions with project-specific data, technology-provider inputs and their own commercial views.

Rather than evaluating a project configuration in isolation, the platform allows alternative configurations to be evaluated through a consistent first-principles engineering and financial framework.

What the Platform Evaluates
Coal & Feedstock
Coal price, carbon content, ash, moisture, sulphur and related feedstock characteristics.

Gasification & Syngas
Gasifier capacity and availability, raw syngas composition, carbon conversion, oxygen requirement and related assumptions.

ASU & Process Units
ASU capacity and availability together with major gas-cleaning, WGS and other process-unit requirements.

Downstream Configuration
Product capacity, downstream allocation, stoichiometric relationships and integrated versus merchant product configurations.

CAPEX & Scaling
Reference plant capacities, reference ISBL costs, capital-cost scaling, OSBL, EPCM and Owners' Costs.

Operating & Commercial Assumptions
Power, catalysts and chemicals, OPEX, product realization and operating utilization.

Financing, Tax & Foreign Exchange
Construction period, debt/equity structure, interest rates, depreciation, tax, exchange rate and Rupee depreciation.
60+ User-Defined Inputs
Each model evaluates more than 60 technical, operating, commercial and financial inputs. Each input is supported by a defined basis, benchmark, modelling relationship or K&A engineering judgement.
Platform Coverage

The platform is structured around two major anchor pathways for large-scale coal gasification projects: Ammonia and Methanol, together with Synthetic Fuels, Gas & Energy and selected downstream chemicals and fuels.

The Government of India's coal-gasification incentive framework also covers a broader range of downstream products. The K&A platform has been developed to evaluate these products where a commercially established process route and sufficiently robust engineering and economic basis can be established.

Anchor-to-Downstream Flexibility: The integrated models allow users to vary the proportion of the anchor product allocated to downstream conversion. A selection of 0% therefore produces the economics of the underlying standalone anchor project, while higher allocations allow users to evaluate increasingly integrated downstream configurations.

Detailed input pages are free to view. Users can review the assumptions, modelling basis and supporting commentary before deciding whether to subscribe and run the model.

Illustrative Strategic Evaluation

Consider the value chain:

Coal → Syngas → Methanol → DME

The platform does not simply calculate the financial performance of a DME plant. It enables evaluation of the integrated configuration, including:

Number and size of gasifier trains
Gasifier module capacity
Methanol plant capacity
DME plant capacity
Percentage of Methanol allocated to DME
Merchant Methanol versus captive conversion
Capital cost and operating cost
Project and Equity IRR / NPV
Sensitivity to major technical and commercial assumptions

The objective is not merely to calculate a project return, but to help identify the economically and strategically appropriate integrated project configuration.

Methodology & Transparency

The platform is designed as a pre-feasibility screening and configuration evaluation tool. Engineering calculations are built from first-principles material relationships wherever appropriate, while reference plant capacities, capital costs and other assumptions are exposed as user-adjustable inputs.

The platform deliberately does not prescribe a particular gasification technology or downstream technology licensor. Technology-specific performance data such as raw syngas composition, carbon conversion, oxygen requirement and operating guarantees can be entered by the user based on information received from the selected technology provider.

Technology agnostic at the input level
The platform does not require the user to adopt a particular gasification technology. Where a technology licensor provides project-specific performance guarantees or recommended operating parameters, those inputs can be used directly in the model.
Intended Application

The platform is intended for strategic project screening, configuration evaluation and early-stage investment assessment.

Potential users include:

Project promoters
Engineering consultants
EPC contractors
Technology licensors
Financial institutions
Government agencies and public-sector enterprises
Scope of the Platform

The platform is intended to support early-stage project evaluation. It does not replace technology licensor guarantees, detailed process design, site-specific engineering, EPC estimates, bankable feasibility studies or project-specific tax, legal and regulatory advice.

Actual project development should ultimately incorporate detailed coal assays, technology-provider guarantees, site investigations, engineering studies, EPC quotations and applicable Government policy and incentive structures.

Annual Subscription

The detailed input pages are available for free viewing, allowing prospective users to examine the model assumptions, methodology and engineering framework before subscribing.

Each model contains more than 60 user-defined technical, commercial and financial inputs, together with supporting commentary and modelling basis.

Model execution, calculated outputs and sensitivity analysis require an active subscription.

The platform is available on an annual organisational subscription basis.
