Gradewise Non Coking Coal Production

(Source: Coal Directory of India, various issues)

Our section Gradewise Coking Coal Production captures classification of coal in India

Non-coking coal had earlier been categorized or graded on the basis of Useful Heat Value (UHV). In order to adopt the best international practices, India decided to switch over from the grading based on Useful Heat Value (UHV) to the grading based on Gross Calorific Value (GCV) and therefore on 16.01.2011 the Ministry of Coal notified the switch over. As per the new system, following nomenclature has been introduced for gradation of non-coking coal

During 2024-25, India’s total non-coking coal production was 981.1 million tonnes.
G11: 260.1 million tonnes (26.5% of total), G12: 134.1 million tonnes (13.7%), G13: 115.6 million tonnes 11.8%) and G14: 128.4 million tonnes (13.1%) dominated the production, together accounting for 65% of total non-coking coal production
These were followed by G8: 71.3 million tonnes (7.3%), G9: 63.6 million tonnes (6.5%) and G10: 87.7 million tonnes (8.9%)

For the benefit of our readers, we present the earlier non-coking coal categorization, and the concordance table

As per the earlier classification based on Useful Heating Value (UHV), there were seven grades, A to G, with Grade A having a UHV> 6200 KCal/Kg, and Grade G having a UHV of between 1300 and 2400 Kcal/Kg

Table below is the Concordance table between the GCV ranges based classification and the erstwhile gradation, however, it is to be noted that this concordance does not depict exact one to-one relation between the two systems
