Transport system in India comprises Rail, Road, Coastal Shipping, Civil Aviation, Inland Water Transport and Pipelines
Freight traffic is typically measured in Million Tons and when multiplid by average distance travelled (km), in Million- or more commonly, in Billion Ton Kilometres (BTKM)
Likewise, passenger traffic is measured in Passengers Originating in Million, and when multiplied by average distance travelled (km), in Million- or more commonly in Billion Passenger Kilometres (BPKM)
Rail and Roads combined carry nearly 90% of total freight traffic in the country
Within the two, The Rail : Road mix in India’s freight transport has got dramatically skewed towards Road in the last five decades, as Railways have consistently lost out to roads. Share of railways in total inter-regional freight traffic has come down from 89% in 1951 to about 25% today. For passenger traffic as well, share of Rail has fallen from 68% in 1951 to just about 10% today
Logistics costs to the economy are estimated at 9-12% of GDP for countries like USA, France, Japan and South Korea, with estimates for China placed at 18% of GDP. There are no systematic logistics cost estimates for India, but with some estimates putting it at 12-15% of GDP
With road being the costliest mode of transport, the economic consequences of such a high dependence on roads for freight and passenger movements are easy to understand
