Mormugao port, situated on the west coast of India, is more than 135-year-old port. It has modern infrastructure capable of handling a wide variety of cargo

The port has 2 non cargo berths and 7 cargo berths and 3 mooring dolphins for handling cargoes. The effective rated capacity of the port is 63.40 MMTPA

There is a dedicated cruise berth of 450 meters length alongside of breakwater for Cruise vessels and for use of Navy and Coast Guard

Mormugao Port is India`s first port to introduce Green Ship Incentives through the ESI, aligning with global efforts to reduce air emissions in shipping. The port`s incentive program, "Harit Shrey," launched in October 2023, offers discounts on port charges based on ESI scores, rewarding ships with higher environmental performance

The Secretary General of IAPH (International Association of Ports and Harbors) praised Mormugao Port in August 2024 for its proactive approach to the ESI programme and for raising awareness about green shipping in the region. This recognition is especially noteworthy as the Mormugao Port was one of three ports in Asia alongside Japan and Oman to offer such incentives

For the year 2023-24, Mormugao port handled 0.6 million tons of POL, out of a total traffic of 20.6 million tons, accounting for 2.8% of total

For the same year, it handled 0.2 million tons of Fertilisers (0.7%), 5.0 million tons of Iron Ore (24.2%), 10.3 million tons of Coal (50.2%) and 4.5 million tons of all other products (22%)

The majority of the coal imported is onward transported by rail to steel manufacturing units in the neighboring state of Karnataka

If we scroll down the above Table, total traffic at Mormugao Port was 14.9 million tonnes in 1990-91, with Iron Ore accounting for 87.1% of total traffic

By 1999-2000, total traffic had increased to 18.2 million tonnes, with Iron ore accounting for 81.4%

Iron Ore traffic peaked at ~40 million tonnes per year during 2009-10 and 2010-11, but fell rapidly thereafter

As a result, total traffic at Marmugao Port has also fallen, from a peak of 50 million tonnes in 2010-11, to current level of ~20 million tonnes per year
