Yield Foodgrains (kg/hectare)

Our section Foodgrains Production covers the production, while our section Area under Foodgrains covers area under cultivation for Foodgrains. This section, namely Yield: Foograins, and the above two sections are linked by the simple identity Yield = Production / Area under Cultivation
However, since most recent data are advance estimates, this identity does not exactly match, typically for the two most recent years, but matches for the earlier years. Even for these two most recent years, differences between calculated and reported yields are very small
For the year 2021-22, Rice production was 1294.7 lakh tonnes while area under cultivation for Rice was 462.8 lakh hectares, this gives calculated yield of 2,798 kg/hectare (1294.7/462.8*1000 for converting tonne to kg), and this is same as the reported yield in the Table below

India's total food grains yield has shown a strong long-term upward trend, increasing from ~783 kg/hectare in 1967-68 to current level of 2,578 kg/hectare, a 3.3x rise during these years, which has enabled the country to not only achieve self-sufficiency in food grains, but becoming an exporter of rice and wheat
